Risk factors for mortality and cost implications of complicated intra-abdominal infections in critically ill patients

Journal of Critical Care Dec 17, 2018

De Pascale G, et al. - Authors of this single-center retrospective cohort study assessed risk factors for 28-day mortality and cost implications among patients with complicated intra-abdominal infections (cIAIs) in the intensive care unit. They prospectively collected data evaluating 137 patients in the ICU with microbiologically confirmed complicated intra-abdominal infections. These patients were stratified according to the adequacy of antimicrobial therapy (initial inadequate antimicrobial therapy [IIAT], n=44; initial adequate antimicrobial therapy [IAAT], n=93). Observations revealed that, in these patients, IIAT and inadequate source control are confirmed predictors of mortality. Empirical antimicrobial strategies and multidrug-resistance infection seemed to be the potential drivers of hospital costs.
