Sen S, et al. - A sum of 11,939 candidates were surveyed in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study during 1993–1995 and were followed for incident atrial fibrillation (AF) through 2013 to examine the relationship between a migraine with visual aura and AF. Authors carried a mediation analysis to inquire if AF was a mediator of a migraine with visual aura-associated stroke risk. They observed 426 cases migraines with visual aura, 1090 cases of a migraine without visual aura, 1018 cases with a nonmigraine headache, and 9405 with no headache. Incident AF was remarked in 232 (15%) of 1516 with a migraine and 1623 (17%) of 9405 without a headache over a 20-year follow-up period. Conclusively, AF was considered a potential mediator of a migraine with visual aura–stroke risk. A migraine with aura was linked with increased risk of incident AF and might likely to cause ischemic strokes.
