Dihydrotestosterone is a predictor for mortality in males with community-acquired pneumonia: Results of a 6-year follow-up study
Respiratory Research Dec 08, 2018
Zurfluh S, et al. - In this investigation, the researchers prospectively studied the relations of sex and mineralocorticoid hormone metabolites with short- and long-term mortality and severity of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in male and female subjects. Levels of different metabolites of sex hormones and mineralocorticoids by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry were measured in 285 patients (60.4% male, mean age 71 years) at baseline. It was concluded that high levels of dihydrotestosterone were linked with higher 6-year mortality in males and testosterone levels were associated inversely with inflammatory markers. The disease severity was estimated by the pneumonia severity index (PSI). Simultaneously, no such relationship was found for females.
