Cognitive function in adolescence and the risk for premature diabetes and cardiovascular mortality in adulthood

Twig G, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers investigated the links between cognitive function in late adolescence and the risk for diabetes, cardiovascular (CVD) mortality, and all-cause mortality in adulthood. For this analysis, they linked data from 2,277,188 adolescents aged 16–19 year. These participants had general intelligence tests (GIT) conducted during pre-military recruitment assessment with cause of death as coded by the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics. Cox models were used to evaluate the links between cognitive function and cause-specific mortality. According to findings, a robust association was observed between cognitive function at youth and the risk for diabetes, and all-cause and CVD-related mortality in this study population. The observed link was independent of adolescent obesity.
