Association between leptin, obesity, hormonal interplay and male infertility

Andrologia Dec 02, 2018

Amjad S, et al. - In this cross-sectional study, researchers examined a possible relationship between leptin, obesity, hormonal interplay and male infertility (a major health problem worldwide). The study sample consisted of 313 males (178 infertile and 135 fertile) and categorised into normal weight, overweight and obese by body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage (BF%). Infertile males were found to have significantly higher levels of BMI and BF% and lower levels of FSH, LH, testosterone and SHBG. However, no significant difference in leptin levels was observed. A strong positive connection to serum testosterone with age, FSH and LH and a negative connection with BMI and BF% were found. The serum leptin levels were not significantly different in fertile and infertile groups and no association with infertility was found. Male obesity was found to be related to infertility and the decrease in sex hormone levels.
