Massicotte-Azarniouch D, et al. - In this population-based retrospective cohort study, researchers examined the risks and subsequent outcomes of syncope among 272,146 patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) aged ≥66 years in Ontario, Canada, from April 1, 2006 to March 31, 2016. They assessed the association of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and urine albumin to creatinine ratio (ACR) with incident syncope by using administrative health-care databases. Furthermore, they used adjusted Cox proportional hazards models to determine the association of incident syncope with the composite outcome of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death by levels of eGFR/ACR. Findings revealed a higher risk of a hospital encounter for syncope, and of related complications, in relation to a lower eGFR and higher ACR in this study population.
