Age at menarche and the future risk of gestational diabetes: A systematic review and dose response meta-analysis

Acta Diabetologica Nov 21, 2018

Petry CJ, et al. – Given that prior studies have demonstrated inconsistent associations of age at menarche with the risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) during pregnancy, researchers conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to clarify trends in this association in published population studies. The study sample consisted of 58,133 pregnancies, from which 3,035 women developed GDM. Upon searching online databases for relevant studies, the investigators identified five studies that met inclusion criteria, which were included in the analysis. According to findings, there was evidence of a non-liner relationship between age at menarche and GDM, as well as evidence of a low heterogeneity. The largest predicted risk of GDM was linked to having a low age at menarche. There was evidence of potential publication bias, which suggested that the maximum true relative risk of GDM at menarche age of 9 years could be closer to 1.6 vs 2. However, the curvilinear relationship between menarche age and future pregnancy risk of GDM appears to be strong.
