Nelis SM, et al. - Researchers used the Improving the experience of Dementia and Enhancing Active Life (IDEAL) cohort including 1,547 people with a diagnosis of dementia to assess the comorbidity profile and the correlations between severity of comorbidity, health-related quality of life and quality of life (QoL) in these subjects. More than one chronic condition was seen in most of the study population. A commonly documented condition was hypertension, which was frequently combined with connective tissue disease, diabetes and depression. They found that, an important risk factor for poor QoL and health status in demented subjects was comorbidity. There is a need for greater recognition of the nature and impact of comorbidity in people with dementia and these people should be provided care via a multidisciplinary approach.
