Adherence of elderly patients with cardiovascular disease to statins and the risk of exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: Evidence from an Italian real-world investigation

Drugs & Aging Oct 31, 2018

Rea F, et al. – Researchers assessed elderly (aged ≥ 65 years) individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) to further examine the relationship between adherence to statin therapy and the risk of exacerbation in this real-world investigation. They used the health-care utilization databases of five Italian territorial units accounting for nearly 35% of the Italian population to recruit a cohort of 6,263 elderly individuals with coexisting COPD and CVD who initiated statin therapy. Evidence revealed markedly reduced risk of COPD exacerbations in correlation to adherence to statin therapy in this study population. The researchers recommend performing more randomized controlled trials—given the study limitations and evidence—to better examine the potential benefits of statins as adjunct therapy in COPD disease.
