A Pediatric Emergency Department intervention to increase contraception initiation among adolescents

Academic Emergency Medicine Oct 29, 2018

Hoehn EF, et al. - In this pediatric emergency department (PED)-based pilot intervention study, researchers evaluated the rate of contraception initiation after contraceptive counseling and appointment facilitation in the PED during the study period, identified barriers to successful contraception initiation, and determined adolescent acceptability of the intervention. Study participants included females aged 14-19 years at risk for unintended pregnancy. To investigate the relationship between contraception initiation and participant characteristics, Chi-square tests were used. Transportation and inconvenient follow-up times were included barriers to follow-up. Among adolescents, PED contraceptive counseling was found to be acceptable and led to successful contraception initiation in 25% of study participants. Participant follow-up with the gynecology appointment was the main barrier to contraception initiation.
