Cardiovascular biomarkers predict fragility fractures in older adults

Heart Oct 19, 2018

Johansson M, et al. – In this population-based cohort study involving 5,415 community-dwelling individuals enrolled in the Malmö Preventive Project, researchers investigated the roles of C-terminal pro-arginine vasopressin, C-terminal endothelin-1 precursor fragment, the mid-regional fragments of pro-adrenomedullin (MR-proADM) and pro-atrial natriuretic peptide (MR-proANP)—four biomarkers of neuroendocrine activation and endothelial dysfunction—in the longitudinal prediction of fragility fractures of the vertebrae, pelvis, and extremities. Study participants had a mean age of 68.9 ± 6.2 years and were followed during 8.1 ± 2.9 years. Findings revealed that fragility fractures in older adults were independently predicted by elevated levels of MR-proADM and MR-proANP. In addition, the investigators noted a two- to three-fold increase in the risk of vertebral and femoral fractures in those with top quartile levels of all four biomarkers.
