Factors associated with complications in total laryngectomy without microvascular reconstruction

Head & Neck Oct 17, 2018

Helman SN, et al. - Authors evaluated the risk factors for postoperative complications following total laryngectomy. A retrospective review of patients who underwent total laryngectomy as a primary procedure from 2005 to 2014 found in the American College of Surgeons National Quality Improvement Program was conducted. Findings suggested that outcomes could be improved in total laryngectomy by identifying and optimizing the risk factors. Major complications correlated to steroid use and class III wound classification were seen in 201 patients. On multivariate analysis, an association between preoperative hematocrit and a reduction of all and major complications was seen.
