Winther JF, et al. - Given that childhood cancer survivors are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetes mellitus—and diabetes is a potentially modifiable risk factor for CVD in the general population—researchers investigated the effect of diabetes on CVD risk among childhood cancer survivors. Study participants included 29,324 one-year cancer survivors who were diagnosed before 20 years of age (1968-2008) and 142,742 population comparison individuals. Among the cancer survivors, 324 had diabetes and 2,108 had CVD. They found that childhood cancer survivors with diabetes had a significantly increased risk of CVD vs survivors without diabetes. They noted, however, that diabetes does not increase CVD risk more in survivors than in the general population.
