Stereotactic radiotherapy of pancreatic cancer: A systematic review on pain relief

Journal of Pain Research Oct 12, 2018

Buwenge M, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the impact of stereotactic RT (SBRT) on pain relief in locally advanced pancreatic carcinoma (LAPC) patients via a literature search on PubMed, Scopus, and Embase (January 2000-December 2017) for prospective and retrospective articles published in English. They analyzed 14 studies (479 patients) reporting the effect of median prescribed SBRT doses ranging from 16.5 to 45 Gy (median: 27.8 Gy), and the number of fractions ranging from 1 to 6 (median: 3.5). Most patients with pancreatic cancer displayed pain relief in correlation with SBRT with an acceptable gastrointestinal toxicity rate. Duodenal obstruction/ulcer, small bowel obstruction, duodenal bleeding, hemorrhage, and gastric perforation comprised the reported gastrointestinal side effects.
