Circulating plasma phospholipid fatty acids and risk of pancreatic cancer in a large European cohort

Matejcic M, et al. – Investigators evaluated the association of plasma phospholipid fatty acids with the risk of pancreatic cancer in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort by using multivariable conditional logistic regression models with adjustment for established pancreatic cancer risk factors. Findings showed that there may be a relationship between higher circulating levels of saturated fatty acids with an odd number of carbon atoms and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and pancreatic cancer risk. The researchers observed a positive association of industrial trans-fatty acids with pancreatic cancer risk among men, while an inverse association of conjugated linoleic acids with pancreatic cancer was observed among women only. They also found a positive association of the long-chain n-6/n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids ratio with pancreatic cancer risk among current smokers.
