Pekkarinen PT, et al. – Researchers investigated whether procalcitonin and presepsin could provide information regarding the severity of post-cardiac arrest syndrome and whether these biomarkers could predict short-term hemodynamical instability and long-term neurological outcome after cardiac arrest in this subcohort analysis of a prospective, observational, multicenter study. Participants included 277 intensive care unit patients treated following out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). Findings showed an association of elevated procalcitonin with hemodynamical instability and worsened long-term outcome in OHCA patients; however, was not strong enough to be used as a single predictor. Presepsin did not provide clinically relevant information for risk stratification following OHCA.
