Elevated 1-hour post-load plasma glucose identifies obese youth with abnormal glucose metabolism and an unfavorable inflammatory profile

Serbis A, et al. - In obese children and adolescents, experts explored whether elevated plasma glucose levels at one hour (1h-GL) during oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) correlated with insulin resistance and certain pro-inflammatory biomarkers. Between January and December 2016, 88 obese children who went to the Outpatient Pediatric Clinic of the hospital were analyzed. According to the findings, an unfavorable metabolic and inflammatory profile was seen in obese children with a 1h-GL ≥8.6 mmol/L during an OGTT, and it is associated with worsened insulin resistance. Results of this study suggest that 1h-GL could be an additional marker for recognizing obese children and adolescents at higher risk of developing obesity complications.
