Gui G, et al. - Most lesions that result in pathological nipple discharge are benign, the researchers investigated if targeting the causative lesion by duct endoscopy can allow for more accurate surgery with less complications. They randomized a total of 68 breasts in 66 patients that needed microdochectomy and/or major duct excision to duct endoscopy (31 breasts) or no duct endoscopy (37 breasts) before surgery. Outcomes suggest that for identifying causative lesions of nipple discharge, diagnostic duct endoscopy is valuable. Neither the pathological yield of benign or malignant diagnoses nor surgical resection volumes were influenced by the duct endoscopy.
