Frailty status affects the decision for long-term anticoagulation therapy in elderly patients with atrial fibrillation
Drugs & Aging Sep 14, 2018
Papakonstantinou PE, et al. - In order to evaluate anticoagulation therapy (AT) in elderly patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and study the effect of patients’ frailty status on their long-term AT, researchers conducted an observational prospective study and enrolled consecutive AF patients (aged ≥75 years) who were hospitalized in the Department of Internal Medicine of the University Hospital of Heraklion (Crete, Greece) from June 1, 2015 to June 1, 2016. Observations suggested that AT is not provided to a high percentage of the elderly patients with AF, even at discharge. Higher bleeding and frailty scores were noted among patients who did not receive AT at discharge, and high all-cause mortality and a high number of hospital readmissions in the 1-year follow-up period after hospital discharge were reported.
