Identification of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation subtypes in over 13,000 individuals
Heart Rhythm Aug 18, 2018
Wineinger NE, et al. - In this retrospective analysis of a large cohort of individuals with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) wearing an ambulatory single-lead ECG patch sensor as part of standard clinical care, researchers identified rhythm patterns. They identified subtypes of the disease, labelled as staccato and legato. Many, short AF episodes were the reported characteristics of the staccato subtype, whereas the legato subtype was characterized by fewer, longer episodes. As patients got older, longer but less frequent episodes were reported more commonly. Only 49.4% of individuals experienced an episode in the first 24 hours of monitoring, but that increased to 89.7% after one week. Differing elements of pathophysiology and disease progression may account for these subtypes, possibly offering different stroke risks.
