Implementation of an opioid detoxification management pathway reduces Emergency Department length of stay

Academic Emergency Medicine Aug 17, 2018

Bellew SD, et al. - Researchers implemented a standardized management pathway in order to improve patient care for those presenting to the emergency department (ED) seeking opioid detoxification. In addition, they measured the effects of this intervention. A before–after study of the effects of an opioid detoxification management pathway on ED length of stay (EDLOS), use of resources (social worker consultation, laboratory tests obtained), and return visits to the same ED within 30 days of discharge was performed. They noted a reduction in EDLOS, a reduction in the utilization of resources, and an increase in the proportion of patients prescribed medications for symptom relief in relation to the pathway implementation.
