Goodwin JS, et al. - Researchers performed a population-based national cohort study with patients nested in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) and hospitals in a cross-classified multilevel model to investigate how the risk of subsequent long-term care (LTC) placement differs between SNFs. They also determined the SNF features related to this risk. Subsequent LTC placement was recognized as an important and negatively viewed outcome for older adults. Findings showed substantial variation in the risk of subsequent LTC placement between SNFs. They also observed lower risk among individuals in higher-quality SNFs. Individuals in SNFs with excellent quality ratings vs those with poor ratings had 22% lower odds of transitioning to LTC.
