Triglyceride-mediated influence of serum angiopoietin-like protein 8 on subclinical atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetic patients: Results from the GDMD study in China

Cardiovascular Diabetology Jul 20, 2018

Zheng T, et al. - Researchers examined the correlations between serum levels of angiopoietin-like protein 8 (ANGPTL8; a newly identified liver-derived hormone related to risk factors for atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes) and subclinical atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes. This study included control subjects, type 2 diabetic patients without subclinical atherosclerosis, and type 2 diabetic patients with subclinical atherosclerosis. They noted a positive link between ANGPTL8 and common carotid artery intima-media thickness (c-IMT), which was partially mediated by triglyceride (TG). For the first time, a strong association was observed between ANGPTL8 and subclinical atherosclerosis. These findings suggested ANGPTL8 to be a new biomarker for subclinical atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes.
