Roberts MB, et al. - Researchers analyzed the world’s literature on interventions for preventing posttraumatic stress disorder among survivors of critical illness. They included studies with adult human subjects treated in an ICU setting, where the intervention arm was aimed at reducing posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms compared to a control arm, and an outcome measure evaluating development of acute stress or posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms. Findings revealed that posttraumatic stress disorder could be prevented among survivors of critical illness, and that early interventions may be the most effective.
