Vara EJ, et al. - In patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), researchers studied the potential role of cytokine profiles, as well as the association between cytokine profiles and fatigue. For this investigation, 38 patients with IBS and 22 healthy individuals were involved. Results of this study suggested that the cytokines interleukin (IL)-5, IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-α might play a part in the development of IBS. Compared to IBS patients without fatigue, serum levels of cytokines were not significantly different in IBS patients with fatigue. Findings revealed that the significance of cytokine levels might be less important than anticipated. It was noted that, among subjects with diarrhea, constipation, or mixed bowel habits, cytokine levels in did not differ significantly in multiple comparisons.
