Abu-Kaf Heba, et al. - Researchers used retrospective cohort study design to evaluate long-term survival of severe sepsis in young patients (less than 45 years of age) admitted with sepsis to ICUs in seven tertiary hospitals between 2003 and 2011 and survived to hospital discharge. These patients were age and sex matched with 818 patients with infectious disease without sepsis selected from internal medicine or Surgical Department admissions. They observed a higher risk of long-term mortality among young patients experiencing an episode of severe sepsis. They noted that during the first 24 months following discharge, the mortality rates were highest.
