Use of antiepileptic drugs and dementia risk: An analysis of Finnish health register and German health insurance data
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Jul 18, 2018
Taipale H, et al. - Researchers performed a case-control analysis of the Finnish public health register and German health insurance data to assess the link between regular antiepileptic drug (AED) use and incident dementia among individuals with dementia of any type (German data, N=20,325) and Alzheimer's disease (AD; Finnish data, N=70,718), matched with up to four control persons without dementia. Adjusted for potential confounding factors such as comorbidities and polypharmacy, they calculated odds ratios (ORs) by applying conditional logistic regression. Based on the findings, a possible contribution of AEDs, especially of those with known cognitive adverse effects (CAEs), to incident dementia and AD was suggested in older persons.
