Liu JJ, et al. - Researchers assessed the risk of progressive chronic kidney disease (CKD) in 1,189 individuals with early-onset type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), followed for 3.9 (interquartile range 3.2–4.7) years. Estimated glomerular filtration rate decline of ≥ 5 mL/min/1.73 m² per year defined progressive CKD. Early-onset T2DM was defined as age at T2DM diagnosis between 18 and 30 years. They observed a higher risk of progressive CKD among individuals with early-onset T2DM. They noted that mainly the early stage of CKD was accompanied by excess risk. Traditional risk factors and a longer diabetes duration did not solely account for the excess risk.
