Meta-analysis comparing the efficacy, safety, and cost-benefit of direct acting oral anticoagulants vs enoxaparin thromboprophylaxis to prevent venous thromboembolism among hospitalized patients

American Journal of Cardiology Jul 13, 2018

Bhalla V, et al. - Researchers compared direct acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs) to low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) for prophylaxis of venous thromboembolism (VTE) among hospitalized patients. They compared a composite of total VTE and any-cause mortality and a composite of major bleeding and clinically relevant bleeding for both approaches in this systematic review with meta-analyses and exploratory cost effectiveness analysis of phase 3 RCTs. Among patients hospitalized for medical illness, DOACs were found to be non-inferior in terms of efficacy, safety, and cost when used for short-term VTE thromboprophylaxis, as revealed in this systematic review and meta-analysis, stratified by type of patients and drug.
