Psoriasis, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular risk factors: A population-based study

Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology Jul 11, 2018

Fernandez-Armenteros JM, et al. - In this observational and cross-sectional population study in Lleida, Spain from a joint hospital / primary care database, researchers investigated classic cardiovascular risk factors and metabolic syndrome (MS) in patients with psoriasis and how they were related to its severity and compared it with the non-psoriatic population. In association with the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors, MS and major cardiovascular events, statistical differences were observed among psoriatic patients. Psoriasis severity groups did not show differences. Findings suggest the necessity for a multidisciplinary approach and close surveillance of cardiovascular risk factors in order to prevent a cardiovascular event in these patients.
