Ross MS, et al. - In this case-control study including patients with unplanned ICU admission after primary surgery for ovarian cancer from January 2007 to December 2013, researchers investigated perioperative factors that could predict unplanned ICU admission, other than previously established risk factors (age, nutritional status, and hematocrit) in gynecologic oncology patients. In addition, they also determined its impact on outcomes in women with ovarian cancer undergoing ovarian cancer cytoreductive procedures. The factors that significantly predicted unplanned ICU admission were failure to optimally cytoreduce and higher EBL. A significant decrease in OS and increase in number of postoperative complications were reported in relation to ICU admission for women undergoing cytoreductive surgery for ovarian cancer.
