Association between body mass index and the risk of hip fracture by sex and age: A prospective cohort study

Journal of Bone and Mineral Research Jun 23, 2018

Kim SH, et al. - In this prospective cohort study, the researchers investigated the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and hip fracture in terms of sex and age, as well as BMI ranges correlated with the lowest risk in Korean men and women. For this analysis, 288,068 Korean adults (aged 50 to 80 years), who underwent health examinations in 2002-2003 to 2013 were followed up. It was observed that the overweight range of BMI was correlated with the lowest risk of hip fracture. A risk factor for hip fracture was lower BMI. Particularly in women, obesity was linked to an increased risk of hip fracture. In Asian adults, overweight could be protective against hip fracture but not obesity.
