Kim D, et al. - Cross-sectional data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2002 was utilized in order to determine the impact of telomere length on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and advanced fibrosis in a large nationally representative sample of American adults. Researchers determined the presence of advanced fibrosis by the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease fibrosis score, aspartate aminotransferase to platelet ratio index and FIB-4 score. The findings demonstrated that leucocyte telomere shortening was correlated with increased risk of advanced fibrosis in the setting of suspected nonalcoholic fatty liver disease independent of other known risk factors.
