Different patterns of alcohol consumption and the incidence and persistence of depressive and anxiety symptoms among older adults in Ireland: A prospective community-based study

Journal of Affective Disorders Jun 22, 2018

Carvalho AF, et al. - Researchers sought for the associations of different patterns of alcohol consumption and the incidence and persistence of depressive and anxiety symptoms in older age. From the Irish Longitudinal Study on Aging (TILDA), they analyzed data on 6095 adults aged ≥ 50 years old. Outcomes suggest an increase in the risk of incident probable depression and anxiety in association with problem drinking among older females. Furthermore, older female participants with problem drinking were noted to be at a higher risk for persistent depressive symptoms. They suggest implementing interventions targeting problem drinking among older females to prevent the onset and persistence of depression in this population in addition to decreasing the incidence of anxiety symptoms.
