Vik I, et al. - A randomized, controlled, double-blind non-inferiority trial was performed to compare ibuprofen and pivmecillinam for uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI) in women. Participants in the study were patients from 16 sites in a general practice setting in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. From 11 April 2013 to 22 April 2016, non-pregnant women aged 18–60 years presenting with symptoms of uncomplicated UTI were screened for eligibility. For treating uncomplicated UTIs, ibuprofen was inferior to pivmecillinam. It was observed that more than half of the women in the ibuprofen group recovered without antibiotics. It was noted that pyelonephritis occurred in 7 out of 181 women using ibuprofen. Ibuprofen alone cannot be recommended to women with uncomplicated UTIs until the identification of those women in need of antibiotic treatment to prevent complications.
