Sultan H, et al. - Researchers provided a quantitative evidence linking the Cluster of Differentiation-68 (CD68)+ macrophage-marker found on temporal artery biopsies (TABs) with disease prognosis in patients with treated or healing giant cell arteritis. Increased CD68 cells/section was seen in patients refractory to initial steroid tapers and those eventually placed on IMT. In patients with presumed giant cell arteritis (GCA), the disease severity could be predicted by CD68+ macrophages and their location on the internal elastic lamina. Triaging of patients to alternate treatment to the usual steroid therapy could be hastened by this marker.
