Pichardo MS, et al. - The correlation between body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and waist-hip ratio and prostate cancer was investigated in African-American and European-American men in the NCI-Maryland Prostate Cancer Case-Control study. This study consisted of 798 men with incident prostate cancer (402 African-American and 496 European-American) and 1,008 population-based controls (474 African-American and 534 European-American). In this study population, findings suggested an obesity paradox among African-American men, where a decreased disease risk correlated with a high BMI and waist circumference, while in European-American men a high BMI increased the risk. In both groups of men, waist circumference was inversely related with prostate cancer.
