Jankowska-Szmul J, et al. - Experts evaluated the effectiveness and safety of CO₂ laser-assisted sclerectomy surgery (CLASS) vs trabeculectomy in primary open-angle glaucoma and exfoliative glaucoma. Nonetheless, a less potent hypotensive effect was demonstrated by CLASS, in the qualified success rate, it was similar to trabeculectomy and offered the reduction in medications up to 12 months. CLASS could be an alternative to trabeculectomy, especially at the earlier glaucoma stage and in patients with a low ECD, with a more attractive complications profile. After trabeculectomy, patients developed a higher rate of early complications, higher endothelial cell density (ECD) loss, higher astigmatism and significant visual acuity deterioration than CLASS.
