Impact of myeloproliferative neoplasms on patients’ employment status and work productivity in the United States: Results from the Living with MPNs survey

BMC Cancer Apr 20, 2018

Yu J, et al. - Researchers determined the influence of myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) on employment, career potential, and work productivity by analyzing the Living with MPNs survey, which is a cross-sectional online survey including respondents aged 18–70 years living in the United States with a diagnosis of myelofibrosis (MF), polycythemia vera (PV), or essential thrombocythemia (ET). The MPN Symptom Assessment Form Total Symptom Score (MPN-SAF TSS), the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment Specific Health Problem questionnaire (WPAI-SHP) and Spearman’s coefficients were used. In half of the employed respondents, a change in the employment status (eg, leaving a job, medical disability leave, early retirement) was noted, which was attributed to their disease since the diagnosis. Due to MPNs, meaningful impairments in work productivity and activities of daily living were reported by currently employed respondents. The severity of symptom burden was highlighted by the degree of impairments.
