Prevalence of sacroiliitis in inflammatory bowel disease using a standardized computed tomography scoring system

Arthritis Care & Research Apr 18, 2018

Chan J, et al. - Experts evaluated the prevalence of sacroiliitis in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) using a validated screening tool. They also ascertained how frequently these patients were referred for rheumatologic evaluation. They recruited the patients with IBD from an IBD clinic. Control patients were recruited from a urology clinic and using chart review were confirmed to be without back pain, spondylitis, psoriasis, colitis, or uveitis. Findings suggested a 3-fold higher prevalence of sacroiliitis in IBD compared with controls. Many patients were not referred to a rheumatologist, despite a growing awareness of this increased prevalence.
