Bladder neck contracture following radical retropubic versus robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy

Current Urology Aug 25, 2017

Spector BL, et al. – Goal of this work was to eliminate inter–surgeon bias through this single–surgeon comparison of bladder neck contracture (BNC) rates following radical retropubic prostatectomy (RRP) and robotic–assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP). It has been validated that RRP offers similar outcomes to RALP with regard to postoperative urinary extravasation, urinary continence, and BNC.

Methods
  • Researchers retrospectively reviewed all RRPs and RALPs conducted by one surgeon over 4 years.
  • They correlated clinical characteristics, intraoperative and postoperative outcomes.

Results
  • It was showed that RRP patients had more advanced cancer and a higher biochemical recurrence rate.
  • There were no significant differences between groups in rates of anastomotic leakage, BNC, or 12–month postoperative pad–free continence.
