History of bariatric surgery and COVID‐19 outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes: Coronado study

Obesity Feb 15, 2022

Researchers aimed to report on the clinical outcomes of COVID-19 hospitalization for patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and a history of metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS).

This is a post hoc analysis from the nationwide observational CORONADO (Coronavirus SARS-CoV2 and Diabetes Outcomes) study; researchers matched patients with T2D and history of MBS to those without MBS for age, gender, and BMI either at the time of MBS or on admission for COVID-19.

  • CORONADO study had 2,398 participants, a history of MBS was evident in 20 of these patients.

  • Outcomes suggest a possible correlation of a history of MBS with improved COVID-19 prognosis in patients with type 2 diabetes.

  • Only after matching preoperative BMI and adjustment for diabetes duration, this beneficial effect remained significant.

  • In the context of COVID-19 pandemic, these data suggest a favorable effect of the benefit-risk ratio of surgically induced body weight loss in lowering the severity of COVID-19.
