Comparison of a dual-surgeon vs single-surgeon approach for scoliosis surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis

European Spine Journal Jan 16, 2021

Hayes JW, Feeley I, Davey M, et al. - The systematic review and meta-analysis were performed to evaluate the available literature to further verify the potential benefit that adopting a dual-surgeon approach offers over single-surgeon operations. Researchers evaluated the impact of dual-surgeon operating compared to single-surgeon with respect to a number of indicators including blood loss, operative duration, and length of hospital stay. They further assessed if blood transfusion or complication rates differed between the two groups. For the analysis, seven studies met the inclusion criteria. There are no randomized control trials assessing dual-surgeon vs single-surgeon operating for scoliosis in this review. They provide aggregated data and analysis of available literature, implying that by adopting a dual-surgeon approach, outcomes in complex scoliosis surgery may be improved.
