Yennurajalingam S, Arthur J, Reddy S, et al. - Researchers investigated the overall frequency of and the independent predictors for nonmedical opioid use (NMOU) in patients with cancer. They conducted this prognostic study including 1,554 patients with cancer who were taking opioids for pain; NMOU behavior developed in 299 (19%) of these patients. Factors identified as independently linked with NMOU behavior included single or divorced status, higher score on the Screener and Opioid Assessment for Patients with Pain tool, higher levels of pain severity, and daily opioid dose. This information could be useful for clinicians in deciding the patients with cancer who may be at a higher risk of developing NMOU behavior.
