Figgatt MC, Salazar Z, Day E, et al. - Many concerns surrounding access to opioid treatment arose because of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). Researchers here examined how treatment experiences changed from the perspective of persons receiving methadone at outpatient treatment facilities for OUD following guidance allowing for the expansion of take-home methadone doses was issued by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in March 2020. An in-person survey was given to 104 persons taking methadone from three clinics in central North Carolina in June and July 2020. Findings revealed that experiences of take-home dosing varied by clinic and there was little diversion of take-home doses. Although expanded access to take-home doses should be allowed by SAMSHA guidance, clinic level variation in adoption of these guidelines may occur. They emphasize further examination of implementation of COVID-19 opioid treatment guidelines.
