Temporal lobe epilepsy surgery in children and adults: A multicenter study

Epilepsia Dec 04, 2020

Barba C, Cossu M, Guerrini R, et al. - Among children (<16 years at surgery) and adults receiving temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) surgery in eight Italian centers, this retrospective multicenter analysis was performed to determine seizure and cognitive outcomes as well as their predictors in these patients. Data from 511 patients (114 children) were studied and significant variations in several clinical characteristics were noted between adults and children. According to findings, long‐term outcomes and predictors of failures differed between adult and pediatric patients undergoing TLE surgery, and these disparities reflected the clinical differences between these groups. More chance of attaining sustained seizure freedom and withdrawing antiepileptic drugs post-TLE surgery was noted in children. Since earlier referral can improve surgical outcome, it should be encouraged.
