Prognostic significance of uric acid change in acute ischemic stroke patients with reperfusion therapy

European Journal of Neurology Dec 04, 2020

Wang C, Cui T, Wang L, et al. - Since uric acid (UA) is an important endogenous free radical scavenger that has been shown to have a neuroprotective effect, researchers intended to determine if there is an association between UA change and outcome in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients with reperfusion therapy. AIS patients with reperfusion therapy were consecutively recruited for this analysis. In total, 361 patients were involved (mean age 68.7 ± 13.9 years, 54.3% males). Data reported that the mean UA on admission was 355 ± 96.1 μmol/L. High UA at admission was correlated with a good 3‐month outcome in patients with reperfusion therapy, while a higher decrease in UA was related to poor outcome. Those with the largest decrease in UA had a higher risk of poor outcome at 3 months vs those with the least decrease in UA.
