Vonzun L, Kahr MK, Noll F, et al. - Via performing this prospective cohort study, researchers sought to systematically stratify all maternal and fetal intervention‐related complications after open fetal myelomeningocele (fMMC) repair of the first 124 cases operated at the Zurich Centre for Fetal Diagnosis and Therapy. All maternal complications following fMMC repair between 2010 and 2019 were obtained and entered into the Clavien–Dindo classification. They used a classification system based on the Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities terminology of Adverse Events, including the preterm definitions of the World Health Organization, for fetal complications. They noted gestational ages of 25.0 ± 0.8 and 35.4 ± 2.0 weeks at surgery and birth, respectively. Overall findings raise awareness concerning complications following open fMMC repair; a severe complication (grade 4) occurred in 6% of mothers and 2% of fetuses and there was a perinatal death rate of 2% (grade 5). These data may aid in prenatal counselling and may aid in improving the system of fetal surgical care. In addition, they allow benchmarking with other centres as well as comparison with fetoscopic approaches.
