Epidemiology of geriatric trauma patients in Norway: A nationwide analysis of Norwegian Trauma Registry data, 2015–2018. A retrospective cohort study

Injury Nov 27, 2020

Cuevas-Østrem M, Røise O, Wisborg T, et al. - Considering the necessity to ensure that the trauma system is targeted, efficient, accessible, safe and responsive to all age groups, researchers here assessed the epidemiology and characteristics of the Norwegian geriatric trauma population, as well as determined disparities between age groups within a national trauma system. Data from the Norwegian Trauma Registry (2015-2018) were retrieved for performing this retrospective analysis. Findings revealed higher mortality and lower trauma team activation rate for geriatric patients vs adult patients. In the geriatric group, low-energy falls predominated and severe injuries most frequently involved the Abbreviated Injury Scale body regions ‘Head’ and ‘Pelvis and lower extremities’. Transportation by air ambulance or treatment by a physician prehospitally was reported for a lower proportion of geriatric patients. In addition, there was longer prehospital time, except for the most severely injured patients.
