Prognostic value of soluble urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor and high-sensitivity c-reactive protein on postoperative mortality in patients undergoing elective on-pump cardiac surgery

Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia Nov 27, 2020

Rasmussen SR, Nielsen RV, Eriksson F, et al. - Researchers examined the correlation between soluble urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) values and linked mortality after elective cardiac surgery. In addition, their secondary aim was to determine whether the prognostic accuracy would improve with using a combined risk model of European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation (EuroSCORE II), suPAR, and/or hsCRP vs EuroSCORE II alone. In this retrospective observational study, they assessed a total of 931 patients admitted for elective on-pump cardiac surgery. Findings suggested correlation of raised preoperative levels of suPAR and hsCRP with all-cause mortality in these patients. However, no improvement in the prognostic accuracy of EuroSCORE II was noted with inclusion of biomarkers.
